Acupuncture for Arthritis:
Supporting Pain Relief, Mobility, and Bone Health
By Dr. Jen Jorgensen, R.Ac., Dr.TCM
Is bone health on your mind? How about pain relief, cooling inflammation, and feeling more flexibility in joints that feel tight or stiff? If you're curious whether acupuncture for arthritis can help, this gentle, evidence-informed therapy may offer support alongside conventional care.

In Chinese Medicine, arthritis, including osteoarthritis, is often classified as "Bi syndrome", meaning "painful obstruction syndrome." This term describes joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility that occur when the normal circulation of the Qi and Blood is disrupted.

Because every person's arthritis develops differently, acupuncture treatment is always tailored to the individual, addressing both the symptoms and the underlying patterns that contribute to inflammation, restricted movement, changes in stability and strength, and joint discomfort.

Receiving consistent acupuncture for arthritis can help restore comfort, improve mobility, and make daily activities easier by reducing pain and stiffness.
Acupuncture influences the body's pain response through multiple physiological mechanisms.¹

Physical pain creates a state of heightened alert within the nervous system. It elevates cortisol and adrenaline levels, causing muscles throughout the body to tense and brace. Over time, this prolonged stress response can contribute to chronic muscle guarding, disturbed sleep, reduced mobility, and diminished emotional well-being.

Gentle acupuncture encourages the nervous system to shift toward a state of calm, repair, and recovery. It stimulates the release of endorphins, our body's natural pain-relieving chemicals, allowing muscles and surrounding tissues to soften and relax. This relaxation improves blood circulation, delivering nutrients to the joints while supporting the removal of metabolic waste.¹˒²

Improved circulation also supports the lymphatic system, an essential part of the body's immune and inflammatory response. During an arthritic flare, lymphatic vessels help clear inflammatory proteins, immune cells, and cellular debris from affected tissues. When inflammation becomes chronic, this function can become impaired, allowing inflammatory substances to accumulate. This leads to stiffness and tightness in joint areas, and perpetuates joint irritation. Research suggests that acupuncture may enhance lymphatic vessel activity and fluid movement, helping resolve inflammation more efficiently while supporting tissue repair.³

Of equal value to treating arthritic symptoms is the therapeutic role acupuncture has in supporting bone health. Emerging research suggests that, when used alongside conventional care, acupuncture may help slow the progression of osteopenia, osteoporosis, and degenerative arthritis by modulating factors that contribute to bone loss and by regulating the bone-remodeling process, including promoting the activity of bone-building cells.⁴

With regard to whole-body health, consistent acupuncture treatment can strengthen and regulate the physiological systems that contribute to overall physical and emotional well-being.

Whether your goal is to find relief from arthritic symptoms or support your overall physical and emotional health, acupuncture offers a gentle, evidence-informed approach that complements conventional care. By addressing both the symptoms and underlying patterns of imbalance, treatment can help you move with greater ease, resilience, and confidence.
